The tiny teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka, in the Indian Ocean, was the 3rd largest exporter of tea worldwide in 2020. Until 1869, Ceylon, as it was then known, grew and exported coffee, but during that year a fungus destroyed all the bushes and led to the collapse of the island’s industry. Many coffee farmers left or turned to other crops such as cardomom, cocoa or rubber. Three years earlier, James Taylor a young Scotsman employed on the Loolecondera coffee estate, had been put in charge of an experimental tea garden. He established 7.7 hectares of tea seedlings, started experimenting with various manufacturing methods and, by 1870, he was ready to send samples of tea for sale on the Kandy market. By the mid 1890s tea had become the main crop, taking over completely from coffee. In 1948, this British colony became a self governing member of the Commonwealth and finally, in 1972. became a republic, renaming itself Sri Lanka. However, so famous were the teas of Ceylon by this point, that the tea industry chose to keep its famous name, and today the lion logo is an assurance that a tea packet bearing the lion contains 100% quality Ceylon tea.
